Have you ever hit a creative wall so hard it made you want to back out before you even got started? That was me with this month’s One Color IG Hop. When I saw the challenge was “metallic” — and that it needed to be words-only (no images!) — my mind went completely blank. I had nothing. Zilch. Nada. It felt like the kind of challenge where the best option might be to gracefully bow out.
But then… inspiration hit me like a lightning bolt in the most unexpected place: Hobby Lobby.
I was walking the aisles, aimlessly browsing like we all do, when a gorgeous sheet of vellum practically jumped off the shelf at me. It was metallic gold, elegant, and full of personality. I instantly saw this card in my head — layout, colors, dies, all of it. The moment I laid eyes on that vellum, my whole creative vibe shifted. Suddenly, I wasn’t dreading the metallic theme anymore. I was all in.
I got home and pulled out the arched die set from This Calls for Confetti — it’s one of my go-to sets for layering and adding instant elegance to a card front. I paired it with rich black cardstock for contrast, and a shimmering gold metallic cardstock that played perfectly off the details in the vellum.
The vellum became the star of the show — just like I imagined it when I saw it in the store. It’s subtle and delicate, but the pattern gives it enough presence to stand on its own in the center of the card. It’s layered under a double-arched gold frame, giving the whole design a touch of glam without overpowering the sentiment.
Speaking of the sentiment — this was the tricky part with a “words-only” challenge. I knew I needed something bold but meaningful, and Altenew’s “hello” die did not disappoint. I cut it from the same gold cardstock to keep the metallic theme going strong. Beneath it, I added the phrase “I believe in you,” stamped in Jet Black Altenew Ink — it’s a simple message, but one that hits the heart.
To finish the card, I added just a few gold glitter confetti pieces for a little sparkle and movement without overwhelming the clean design. Sometimes it’s those final touches that make all the difference.
What I love most about this card isn’t just how it turned out — though I do love it — it’s that it reminded me of how inspiration can come when you least expect it. I nearly sat this hop out. I almost didn’t make anything. And then a random stroll through Hobby Lobby sparked an idea that lit up my whole creative process.
So, if you’re in a creative funk or facing a challenge that feels impossible — hold on. You never know when inspiration will hit. It could be in a store aisle, a color swatch, a phrase someone says, or even a piece of vellum waiting for its moment.
I hope that you have been inspired to create something today.
